Dhoni is located 15 km from Palakkad town in Kerala. It is famous for Dhoni Falls and Western Ghat Forest. Dhoni Falls is located on top of Dhoni Hills near Palakkad town.Dhoni Falls is relatively less than 5 kms away compared to Malampuzha Dam which is hailed as a major tourist attraction. Access to the falls requires a 3 hour trek to the top of the Dhoni hills through the forest. This key control factor greatly reduces visitor numbers.
Although the waterfall is very small, the beautiful surroundings suit it. The water from here ultimately feeds the Malampuzha Dam. This Kerala waterfall enjoys the beautiful ambience of the Dhoni hills and a great trek. The check post set up at the base checks bags, especially for alcohol. There is a ban in place around the falls.
There is a narrow mountain road suitable only for 4 wheel drives and motorbikes up to the falls. Private vehicles are not allowed to cross the check point.
Dhoni Falls Trek: The 3 hour trek starts from the teak plantations at the base of the hill. It continues uphill through the forest and can be walked for a distance of 4 km without the services of a guide. Although elephants, tigers, king cobras and wildebeests live in the remote jungle, the trek is considered safe. However, there is a chance to spot some small wildlife on the way to the falls.
Other attractions of Dhoni Village: Government owned cattle and goat farm in Dhoni. Famous for its Swiss breed of cattle, the outfit has hundreds of homes. Apart from the regular dairy farm, a sperm collection facility also operates here.
Local legends link the origins of the foothills temple to a much younger age. According to the story it was built as a tribute to Goddess Shiva. This small but charming structure exemplifies Kerala architecture.
