Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the border of Wayanad, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The protected forest area covers an area of 345 sq km, with the Tholpetty and Kurichiat Ranges to the north-east and the Sultan Bathery and Muthanga Ranges to the south-east. The Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve is located in the Nagarhole and Bandipur forests of Karnataka and the Mudumalai Forest in Tamil Nadu. These protected zone authorities emphasize the need for a governance system that integrates the lifestyle and forest protection of tribals and other farmers living within and outside the forest.
The place is home to tigers and leopards. Wild buffalo, spotted deer and llamas can also be seen. Birds, butterflies, other reptiles and mammals are also abundant in the wet deciduous and evergreen forests. On the way to Muthanga, you can see wildlife along the way. Night traffic to Karnataka via Muthanga has been banned to protect the forest.

കര്‍ണ്ണാടകയും തമിഴ്‌നാടുമായി ചേരുന്ന വയനാടിന്റെ അതിര്‍ത്തിയില്‍ രണ്ടു ഭാഗങ്ങളിലായി ചിതറികിടക്കുന്ന വന്യജീവി സങ്കേതമാണ് മുത്തങ്ങ. വടക്കു കിഴക്കായി തോല്‍പ്പെട്ടി, കുറിച്യാട് റേഞ്ചുകളിലും, തെക്കു കിഴക്കായി സുല്‍ത്താന്‍ ബത്തേരി, മുത്തങ്ങ റേഞ്ചുകളിലുമായി 345 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റർ വിസ്തൃതിയുണ്ട് ഈ സംരക്ഷിത വനപ്രദേശം. കര്‍ണ്ണാടകയിലെ നാഗര്‍ഹോളെ, ബന്ദിപ്പൂര്‍ വനമേഖലയുമായും, തമിഴ്‌നാട്ടിലെ മുതുമലൈ വനമേഖലയുമായും ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടു കിടക്കുന്ന ഈ വന്യജീവി സംരക്ഷിതപ്രദേശം നീലഗിരി ബയോസ്ഫിയറിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണ്. വനമേഖലക്കകത്തും പുറത്തുമായി താമസിക്കുന്ന ഗിരിവര്‍ഗ്ഗക്കാരുടെയും മറ്റു കര്‍ഷകരുടെയും ജീവിത ശൈലിയും, വനസംരക്ഷണവും യോജിപ്പിച്ച ഒരു ഭരണ സംവിധാനത്തിനാണ് ഈ സംരക്ഷിത മേഖലാ അധികൃതര്‍ ഊന്നല്‍ നല്‍കുന്നത്.
കടുവകളുടെയും പുള്ളിപ്പുലികളുടെയും ആവാസ കേന്ദ്രമാണ് ഇവിടം. കാട്ടുപോത്ത്, പുള്ളിമാന്‍, മ്ലാവ് എന്നിവയും കാണാം. ആര്‍ദ്ര ഇലപൊഴിയും കാടുകളും നിത്യഹരിത വിഭാഗങ്ങളിലും പെട്ട കാടുകള്‍ ഉള്ളതിനാല്‍ പക്ഷികള്‍, ചിത്രശലഭങ്ങള്‍, മറ്റു ഉരഗങ്ങള്‍, സസ്തനികള്‍ എന്നിവയും ധാരാളമായുണ്ട്. മുത്തങ്ങയിലേക്കുള്ള യാത്രയില്‍ തന്നെ വഴിയരികില്‍ വന്യജീവികളെ കാണാം. വനമേഖലയുടെ സംരക്ഷണത്തിനായി മുത്തങ്ങ വഴി കര്‍ണ്ണാടകയിലേക്കു രാത്രി വാഹനയാത്രയ്ക്കു വിലക്കു ഏര്‍പ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
